Inside: A easy recipe for DIY Four Thieves essential oil blend. Mix up a quick batch of this essential oil blend for wellness.
It’s been a hectic few days with my little one out of school, and my husband and I at home trying to work remotely. I’ve been trying to find way to keep her occupied and finding little chores and activities to do around the house.
She’s old enough now that she can help sweep the floors, and as I got my supplies ready to mop, I noticed that my favorite cleaning essential oil blend – my DIY Four Thieves oil blend was running low.
I LOVE this essential oil blend for wellness.
It smells so good – spicy and sweet, that I use it for everything. I love diffusing it to freshen and clear the air. I love adding a few drops into a glass spray bottle, mixed with water, to spray on my hardwood floors as I mop. I even add a few drops to my shower floor and breathe in that lovely scent as the steam diffuses it. It’s especially nice to do this if you’re feeling a bit congested or stuffy.
And I thought – I can just let my little one make a quick batch of the DIY Four Thieves essential oil! It’s super simple to make, and quite a bit cheaper than buying it pre-blended.
This awesome essential oil goes by several names but the two most popular are:
Young Living Vitality Thieves Oil
doTerra On Guard Essential Oil Protective Blend
And to be honest, I use so much of this DIY Four Thieves oil blend, that buying the pre-blended bottles is WAY too expensive.
Also, it’s totally up to you which brand of essential oil you use. Use whatever brand you already have on hand, but if you need to purchase any of these oils, my favorite is the NOW Essential oils. They are high-quality, non-synthetic, and non GMO.
If you have a friend that sells doTerra or Young Living and can afford to pay those prices – those are great, too!
While both of the above blends work the same way, they do smell slightly different. My personal favorite is the doTerra version, but my husband prefers the scent of the Young Living blend, so I’ve provided a copycat “OnGuard” blend and a copycat “Vitality Thieves” blend.

I gathered my oils, and a glass bottle with a dropper.
These are great for storing your favorite essential oil blends.
I read out my recipe, and let my little one count the drops. In between, I told her story of the “four thieves” that the blend was known for.
The story goes – in the 14th century, during the Black Death, a group of 4 men began robbing grave sites and the homes of those that died from the plague. When they were finally caught, the judge was astonished by how they were able to do this for so long without catching the plague themselves.
The men decided to trade their secret in exchange for a kinder punishment. Turns out – they had been merchants shipping spices and tea, and when the Black Death shut down their ports, they had no way to earn a living. They felt they had no choice but to turn to thievery. To protect themselves, they made a “magical” potion of herbs and spices that they breathed in to guard against the disease.
Those herbs and spices later became known as the “four thieves” blend. My DIY Four Thieves essential oil blend uses this same mixture.
