We’ve been a bit cautious to do much traveling these days. Pandemics will do that, I guess. And while I’m not quite ready to jump on a plane or navigate a busy city via public transport, I definitely wanted to get away for a few days. To disconnect. Relax. Find some peace.
An Ohio cabin getaway weekend sounded heavenly. Not too far away, but not too close. A secluded cabin in Amish Country, Ohio sounded perfect. So we decided to go check out Black Creek Retreat!
Black Creek Retreat was everything we could want for our Ohio cabin getaway weekend. It was about an hour and half drive from our home in Columbus, and very private. The 36-acre property has walking trails, fishing, bird-watching, and is a short drive to nearby Amish country for shopping or exploring.
Which was pretty perfect considering my goals were to relax, hike, read and play around with my camera.
After a relatively quick drive from Columbus, we found ourselves at the cabin. Black Creek Retreat is so secluded and peaceful that you really feel like you’re away from it all. Because reception isn’t the greatest, the owners gave us written instructions so we didn’t have to rely on our GPS system.
The directions were perfect, and the road leading to the cabin was marked clearly.
The cabin was gorgeous. It looked like something out of a post card. We parked our car and immediately took a walk around to explore.
Everything was so green and lush, as far as we could see. All around us were the soothing sounds of nature. A hummingbird buzzing. Leaves rustling as a groundhog waddled by. A twig snapping as a deer walked through. My daughter, a definite city kid, delighted in everything we saw.
Like this moss covered tree stump. She looked up at me, eyes glittering, to announce that it looked like the perfect spot for a fairy garden. And then spent a few minutes breathlessly telling me if she lived here, what she would plant and how she would decorate it.
One of our favorite things were how there were bird feeders all over the property. We saw so many different birds during our time at the cabin. It was incredible.
The front porch was great. On one side, there was a grill and small table and chair set up. and the other had a porch swing in front of a hummingbird feeder.
When we finally made our way inside, we were immediately welcomed by this generous anniversary gift! Such a sweet and considerate touch. I had completely forgotten that I had mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary this weekend.
The cabin was rustic and cozy. On the first floor, there was a large comfy couch with extra blankets.
The kitchen had the cutest red retro fridge, a 2-burner stove, large toaster oven, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker. It was well-stocked with kitchenware, pots, pans, paper products and cleaning supplies. The shelves were stocked with basics like cooking oil and salt & pepper, along with some canned and boxed food items. The fridge was stocked with butter, a few food items, and lots of bottled water.
A sweet note from the owners mentioned we were welcome to anything in the cabinet or the fridge.
While there are some restaurants about 15-25 minutes away, we ended up bringing most of our own food because we just wanted to unplug and stay put.
We brought some sausage, eggs and toast for breakfast, and pre-made dishes like pasta salad, frozen pizza, and sandwiches to keep things simple. For snacks, we brought fresh fruit, crudite, chips, and cheese & crackers. We wanted to keep it completely simple, but next time, I think we’ll bring along some steaks and burgers to grill out.
There was also a cozy fire in front of the couch that lit up with just the touch of a button.
In a cabinet, we found dozens of dvds, books, maps, and games. There is a tv with dvd hook up in the cabin and it was so nice to settle in at the end of the day with a family-friendly movie and a roaring fire.
We also found a bag of popcorn in the cabinet!
The bathroom was also on the first floor. If you have a young child, you’ll appreciate the full bathtub!
In addition to towels, wash cloths and luxury bath products, we were surprised to see makeup remover, Q-tips, and cotton balls.
There was also a basket full of anything you might possibly need. Sunscreen? Bug spray? Eye drops? Toothpaste? It’s all here. The owners literally thought of everything. It made us feel so pampered and taken care of.
Upstairs is the bedroom. There was a queen size bed, as well as two twin size beds you could pull out. If you need a bit more room, you can also request a queen size mattress.
My little one loved her bed, and we did too. Very comfortable, which is extremely important when your goals include lots of naps!
Ohio Cabin Getaway to Black Creek Retreat – What We Did
We had originally planned on spending some time exploring nearby Amish Country, but the truth is, we were enjoying our tech-free time at the cabin so much that we didn’t much feel like leaving.
Instead, we slept in and awoke to the sounds of birds chirping. And then laid in bed for a few more hours, reading.
When we finally felt ready to get out of bed, we made coffee and sat on the porch and sipped it slowly.
Then we grabbed the binoculars that were provided, and a bird watching book off the shelf and watched our very own nature show.
We hiked around the property. There were 3 or 4 trails marked on a map and we explored them all. Then we practiced our balance walking along the stone barrier. Some of us had better balance than the others, lol.
We spent hours pushing this one on the tree swing. Hours.
We had so much fun relaxing that we didn’t even do everything we could have done. Like building a fire in the fire pit (they provide some wood to get you started)
We also didn’t fish or swim or hunt (please note in order to hunt you must have explicit written permission from the owners.) Instead, we disconnected and rested. Paused for a moment and found joy in having nothing to do. Sat outside, looking up, as my husband pointed out the stars that we never seem to make out in the city. (Fun fact: in college, he started out as an astronomy major!)
This weekend was everything my family needed to reset and reconnect. I’m so glad we were able to get away and can’t wait to return.
If you’re feeling like you need a break – a respite from a busy, connected schedule, I highly recommend an Ohio cabin getaway to Black Creek Retreat! In fact, I even have a coupon code you can use for 10% off your stay – GETAWAYSECLUDED
